Looks like more people are wanting an iPhone rather than an Android phone, according to a survey conducted by ChangeWave Research.Of 4163 respondents questioned, up to 46% of consumers planning to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days say they'll choose an Apple iPhone and 32% will look for an Android and measly 4% are still attached to them BlackBerry phones.

The survey sample consisted of 89% U.S. respondents and 11% from outside the U.S.

While the sample of respondents are wide enough to conclude where consumers want, it does not reveal what consumer can afford. Apple's marketing knew how to monger hype and it is paying off. Most of the consumers these days, associate iPhone with mobile phones, when they talk about phones generally or dream about them.

This seems to be extending beyond the iPhones themselves according to the same survey, people are willing to extend the loyalty in to other Apple products as well, Specially iCloud. 26% of the current Apple customers and 13% of non-Apple users have admitted that they will be swayed towards Apple products due to iCloud.

That is exactly where Google seem to fail. Google has been providing cloud services for ages, like GMail storage but I guess beyond techies, many people do not even know it exists, let alone by a catchy name like iCloud. Microsoft and Amazon are not doing any better in that front either.

The differences do not stop there, 70% of current iOS device users said that they were satisfied with Apple products and it was 50% for Android users. Windows phone 7 users, 57% were very happy with their phones.

I was at a major retail store for electronic goods to get a protective shield installed on my iPad 2 (64GB) and my colleague's Asus EEE Pad Transformer. I saw many people lingering around Apple iPad isle but equally similar number on all other tablet isles.

AnandTech tests the iPad 2 CPU (below) and GPU (above). You really couldn’t ask for a faster device as it crushes the iPad and XOOM in almost every test. A better test might be up against some netbooks.
Other interesting tidbits: perhaps 2 different display vendors and Wifi range might be less than iPad 1.

Jailbreak warning spotted in updated Flipboard for iPad, should you panic?

It appears that the updated Flipboard for iPad puts up a warning when you run it on a jailbroken iPad. As noted by Cult of Mac’s editor-in-chief Leander Kahney, the alert informs you that you’re running a jailbroken device which may cause “bugs, crashes or other unpredictable behavior.” Other than that, the app continues to work without a hiccup.

It’s the first instance of a major up containing a jailbreak warning, at least to my knowledge. Let’s hope Apple doesn’t get any ideas. It wouldn’t entirely surprise me if they began requiring developers to include such warnings by default. They could even update iOS to automatically alert users whenever they run apps on jailbroken devices.
UPDATE: As noted in the comments, Skype, DB Navigator, iBooks and some other apps sport similar jaibreaking alerts. Also worth noting regarding the Flipboard app, it’s a one-time notification meant to discourage jailbreakers from blaming developers for erratic app performance and prevent 1-star reviews on the App Store as a result.

In UK, Binatone, an Android hardware maker, has just done that. The £99 iDECT iHome Phone is in fact an Android Based Home Phone.

The phone has a very nice stylish base which acts as a speaker phone and an answering machine and of course charges the phone as well. The base connects to your home phone line (POTs).

The phone has a 2.8" 320 x 240 LCD has the menu as well as the Android home screen.

The phone can connect to your home WiFi system to access internet and all the information will flow through home phone, which actually looks like a larger mobile phone.

The phone comes with seriously outdated Android 1.6 and has 256MB memory which could be extended with a micro SD card. The phone has DECT Cat. 2.0 and 802.11b/g WiFi for connectivity. The Lithium-ion battery (910mAh) will give 8 hours of talk time or 80 hrs of standby time.

I guess this is the start of a new line of home phones. I wonder what Apple fan boys will do, will there be an iOS home phone?

Yes with the new iPad 2 emergence, there are many more questions than before, when the original iPad came out. People just decided to 3G or not and the memory capacity they wanted and those who decided on 3G signed up with AT&T and made the carrier rule their lives for next two years!.

But now the playing field is different now. There are two carriers with different data plans, multitude of memory options. As far as connection to the net goes, people with iPhone or Android phones that can tether and then there are MiFi devices with 3G, 4G connectivity and pay as you go plans are good options as well. So connectivity becomes a major issues with iPad 2.

Aside from bogus coverage maps that are overlaid with non 3G coverage, you need to check the coverage, again, properly, if you are a travelling type. Then there is 3G and There is 3G, meaning all 3Gs are not the same. Right now, AT&T 3G (when available) seems to be faster than Verizon's.

The maps that show coverage, AT&T map does not clearly show 3G coverage, it is lumped up with EDGE as data coverage, But Verizon is a bit more clear. So you might be paying for 3G and getting EDGEd by AT&T. At that point the speed difference between the two carriers become a non issue.

The data plan contracts are also different now. Both the carriers are trying not to choke you with standard two year contracts and offering month to month plans. Then again, AT&T offers postpaid and prepaid plans where Verizon is not.

Either case you and turn the data plan on and off but the two versions of iPad 2's are not interchangeable, as far as I know and if you chose one carrier, you got to stay with that carrier.

AT&T postpaid and prepaid plans seem to be a bit complicat

ed, Post paid customers will pay $10 per addition 1GB data they use over the limit and Prepaid 2G customers will have to pay $25 for extra 2G data, meaning you will be billed $25, the moment you jump over your alloted limit. Prepaid 250MB customers! No idea AT&T is not clear about it, here is the link.

In that sense, AT&T rates might not be as cheap (are they?) as they appear. And sign up for higher rate, if you planing to do more than occasionally checking email, or and browsing.

As far as the range of possibilities, Verizon gives you 1. 3, 5 and even 10GB options. But 10GB on AT&T is only $65 where Verizon charges $80.

So you really need to calculate your data usage, and with lowest pla

n of both the carriers seem to be expensive but Verizon at least give you 1GB of data. So if you are aiming for the lowest data usage, Verizon is a better choice.

We always think of Google Voice to be in the high tech arena and would hardly associate it with bees. Google Voice Blog tells us otherwise.
Backwards Beekeepers, an organization dedicated to helping and saving native honey bees by teaching people how to use chemical free beekeeping. (I knew about bee keeping but until I visited them, did not know about all the aspects of it :). Their aim is to increase the bee population in L.A but they are advising people all over the world in the matter of bee keeping.
Bees some time invade peoples garages, hot tubs, trees, chimneys and sometimes even minivan bumpers! So who do they call, Of course Backwards Beekeepers.

So they installed their Google Voice number and setup to email 500 odd bee keepers to receive an email when someone leaves a message about unwelcome bees. So one of these people will take on the job of helping both, the hosts and the bees by rescuing the bees!.
So Google Voice interviewed them for Google Voice user stories, asked the Backwards Beekeepers;

XDA-developers and it's resourceful members have uncovered official updates for Nexus S and Nexus One. The Updates are the same as the OTA Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) update announced earlier.

So users and developers alike should be happy now as none has to wait for those dastardly OTA updates. There are so many good improvements that comes with this Android 2.3.3. update for Nexus S and Nexus One. One of the notable is the NFC API for developers, now developers can actually do something with these phones capabilities.

One thing is make sure you get the correct ROM, correct version and build number as well. XDA- Developers have plenty of information on the link below. Read it carefully to proceed on getting the upgrades. There is also some modifications and addons to the original ROMs to make them even more exciting.

Motorola, reportedly has placed orders for about 700,000-800,000 units of Motorola Honeycomb based tablet, Motorola XOOM, with four color options targeting the first quarter of 2011. The news comes from Digitimes' sources from upstream component makers. They also speculated that the orders might go up as high as one million units in the quarter.

The boom in the tablet PC market stand to make greater opportunities for large, (Taiwan-based notebook chassis makers such as Catcher Technology and Foxconn Technology), as well as to others ( handset chassis makers including Taiwan Chi Cheng (CCC) and Silitech Technology) in the coming year.

Though we’ve gotten the update in the form of leaks for several US variants of the Samsung Galaxy S, no one has seen an official rollout yet. Sprint has beat everyone in America to the punch – just as they did with the Froyo update for the EVO – and is now offering Android 2.2 for users of the Samsung Epic 4G.

If you haven’t received it over the air, you’ll be able to manually download and install the update yourself. Instructions for that can be had below, courtesy of Brief Mobile. If you are the type who would rather wait for it to be pushed to you, then you’ll be seeing it anywhere between now and the end of the month. The process is really easy, though, so if you have been waiting for this, there should be no reason to not jump on this as soon as possible.

Instructions: Update Android 2.2 Froyo for Epic 4G
Intended for those going from stock Android 2.1 to the latest firmware.
Download the required update.zip file (Mirror: http://www.multiupload.com/EBDH959PPM)
RENAME the file to “update.zip”

WikiLeaks has been struggling to fend off a DDoS attack ever since it started releasing secret embassy cables, and now it lost one extra ally: its DNS services provider, EveryDNS.network……

According to a statement as of EveryDNS.net, the services were terminated as the DDoS crackdown resting on WikiLeaks started toward be alive a threat toward the repair itself plus its extra users.

EveryDNS.net provided domain name system (DNS) services toward the wikileaks.org domain name pending 10PM EST, December 2, 2010, when such services were terminated. The interference on issues arises from the fact that wikileaks.org has become the target of multiple distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks……. These attacks have, plus future attacks would, threaten the stability of the EveryDNS.network infrastructure, which enables access toward almost 500,000 extra websites, the statement read.

This has effectively wiped WikiLeaks off the Internet, meaning it is now completely inaccessible. WikiLeaks has confirmed this resting on its Twitter account, putting emphasis resting on the fact that EveryDNS.net is a U.S. company. WikiLeaks,org domain killed by US everydns.net after claimed mass attacks, the tweet read.

Earlier, WikiLeaks tried to employ Amazon Web Services toward enhance the site stability and protect itself as of DDoS attacks, but that didn’t previous long, as Amazon quickly dropped WikiLeaks as of its servers.

iOS 4.2.1 was released yesterday for iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch 4G, 3G, 2G and iPad. Even though iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak is possible via Redsn0w 0.9.6b2, but Cydia is still broken which makes the jailbreak pointless for many. It also contains new baseband for all iOS devices which currently makes it impossible to unlock using existing version of Ultrasn0w. So if you upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 and now want to downgrade back to iOS 4.1 / 4.0.2 / 4.0.1, follow the instructions posted below to downgrade iOS 4.2 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod touch and iPad to iOS 4.1 / 4.0.x.

NOTE: This guide will only work if you have SHSH blobs saved for the respective firmware you downgrading to.

Step 1: Download the required old ipsw firmware files. (Download links: iOS 4.1, iOS 4.0.2, iOS 4.0.1)

Step 2: Put your device into DFU mode (not recovery mode).

Connect your iPhone to your computer.
Turn iPhone off.
Start iTunes.
Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so.
Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device.
iTunes will now recognize your iPhone.

Note: Your iPhone screen at this time should be blank (black in color), if not, then you are most likely in Recovery Mode, not DFU mode.

(Step 3 is for iPhone 4, iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, 3G, 2G (MC Model) users only. If you are on iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G (non-MC model), skip Step 3 and continue from Step 4)

Step 3: This step is applicable to iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G and iPod touch 2G (MC model) which have their SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) saved on Cydia for the firmware you downgrading on. If you don’t have your SHSH files saved, you cannot downgrade the mentioned devices.

So what we will do is to trick iTunes into thinking that it is watching Apple servers, while in real, we are going to change the address to Saurik’s server.

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and locate “hosts” file.

Mac OS X users can get to “/etc/” directory by going through “Go –> Go to Folder” from Finder.

Open this “hosts” file in Notepad (for Windows) or TextEdit (for Mac OS X) and add this

Now simply save this file and you are good to go!

NOTE for Windows 7 and Vista: Start “Notepad” with Administrator privileges by right clicking on “Notepad” app, and click on “Run as Administrator“ option.

NOTE for Mac OS X: Make sure you have full read and write access on your account when you are saving the host file. If it still throws permission error, simply copy the host file to desktop, make the required changes, and then replace it with the original file in “/etc/” directory.

Step 4: You will now have to restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to the firmware you downloaded in Step 1. Click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac (Left “Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your downloaded firmware file. Select that ipsw file and click on “Open”.

Step 5: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the requested firmware on your iPhone. Your iPhone screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. Now at some point, iTunes will probably throw 1004 or 1015 error at you. This is normal, just ignore this error as the firmware has already been successfully installed on the device.

Step 6: Your iPhone at this point will be stuck in Recovery Mode, showing that “Connect to iTunes” screen. To exit your device from Recovery Mode, download this program called TinyUmbrella (Windows / Mac). Run it and the click on “Exit Recovery” button. Your device will now restart normally.

This is it, you should now be able to jailbreak and unlock your device on iOS 4.0.x with JailbreakMe

After reading the review by engadget, the feelings are mixed. Yes it carries a whole lot of goodness but the battery life and the design quirks make it hard to make my phone. I am looking forward to a good phone so I can replace the soon to expire iPhone contract. I hope it will not be an iPhone 4, even though we already have a few Droids among us.
The HTC desire HD presents Android Froyo on a 4.3 inch screen running new version od HTC Sense and hiding the second generation snapdragon, 1GHz QSD8255 chip, with Adreno 205 for graphics powering the phone. 768MB of RAM supports Android Froyo to shoe some magic. While empowering the phone with features like above, HTC missed out on providing a proper battery to carry the load, the 1230mAH fail! Engadged says it the best

LG Optimus A new Windows 7 mobile Phone review and its features

Engadget has got their hands on a LG's Optimus 7, a very capable Windows Phone 7 based phone. The 1GHz Snapdragon powered, 5 megapixel camera that can shoot 720P videos equipped is said to be the WP7 Ambassador for LG. So I earnestly sat down to read the fine article that covered internals, camera functions, WP7 operations, hardware, software and the 3.8" display. At the end, their conclusion, is not far from mine, despite the fact, I have not even touched the LG's Optimus 7.

Engadget, after a very lengthy walk through that involves many photos, videos and of course material to fill a few pages, had this to say;

We feel somewhat odd giving such a high grade to a device that really brings nothing new to the table in terms of hardware. LG might be making gorgeous retina displays for a certain other phone maker, but that IPS goodness is nowhere to be seen here. The camera is also only mediocre, while the internal spec can be had on literally any other Windows Phone 7 device. What's really got us hooked, however, is the inescapable feeling of a quality piece of mobile kit. From the very first time we picked it up, the Optimus 7 has been delighting us with its look and feel and that emotional connection just refuses to go away. It's a minimalist interpretation of what the best possible Windows Phone should be like, and its small design flourishes are augmented with an almost perfect record of intelligent design decisions. Throw in the actually valuable Play To media streamer and the fun Panorama Shot from LG's own software labs, and you get a very competent contender. It's hard to quite crown it the finest WP7 launch device -- after all, Samsung's Omnia 7 has a bigger and significantly better display -- but the LG Optimus 7 might just be the one we most enjoyed using.

The free Web mail service soon will be switching to a new approach that Microsoft hopes will give Hotmail an edge over rival offerings from Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc.

The upgrade, expected to be available in July or August, will automatically sort incoming messages into different categories devoted to users’ key contacts and Internet social networks. It will also provide previews of incoming photos, videos and other material without having to open an attachment or click on a link.

Other tools are being added to make it less cumbersome to send photos, videos, documents and other attachments to e-mail recipients. Another tweak is supposed to make is easier to sync Hotmail on mobile phones.

t’s all part of the most extensive overhaul to Hotmail since Microsoft bought the service 12 years ago, said Chris Jones, a Microsoft executive who is overseeing the renovations.

“Our service wasn’t doing the best job that it could,” Jones said during a Monday preview of the makeover.

The new features are supposed to enable people to spend less time managing their inboxes and more time enjoying and digesting what’s in the messages.

Microsoft is hoping the added convenience will help overcome the perception that Hotmail was growing stale as Google and Yahoo added more bells and whistles to their free Web mail services.

Even as it made relatively few changes, Hotmail remained the world’s most used service with 360 million users, according to statistics complied by comScore Inc. Yahoo ranks second globally with about 284 million users followed by Google’s Gmail at 173 million users.

Now Microsoft thinks it might have shot of supplanting Yahoo as the top Web mail service in the U.S. (Yahoo’s e-mail service has 95 million U.S. users compared to 47 million for Hotmail and 43 million for Gmail, according to comScore).

Hotmail’s most significant changes will provide new ways to look at photos and videos sent through e-mail. Microsoft expects this feature to be particularly popular because it says 55 percent of Hotmail’s storage is consumed by photos sent as attachments.

The new technology will detect when an e-mail contains a photo attachment and automatically display a thumbnail of the image (or images) at the top of the message. Hotmail will provide similar previews when it detects links to photo-sharing sites Flickr and SmugMug or to video-sharing sites YouTube and Hulu.

Other changes are designed to make it easier to send photos, video and other Web content. A new insert bar will allow users to send up to 10 gigabytes — about 200 photos each containing 50 megabytes — by uploading them to Microsoft’s free online storage service Skydrive, where they can only be viewed by the recipients of the e-mail.

Videos and other Internet material can be found through a new panel that will connect Hotmail to Microsoft’s Internet search engine, Bing. The videos and other Bing-generated content can then be inserted into an e-mail with a mouse click. The e-mail recipient will then be able to see the video or other material without having to click through a Web link.

As it spruces up Hotmail, Microsoft also will try to make it more secure. Embracing a change recently made by Gmail, Microsoft is adding a so-called “secure sockets layer” (denoted by “https” before a Web address) that encrypts e-mail to make it less vulnerable to computer hackers.
